5 Things to Know Before Hitting the Gym in the New Year
By Kelly Wirht on
So many people and so many machines... where to start?! At the beginning of the year, gyms can get super crowded and a little overwhelming. That's why we developed the Tone It Up workouts to pair with the Tone It Up Challenge... you don't even have to leave your house for a total body sweat sesh! ;) But if you like to take your cardio to the gym or add in a lil' somethin' somethin' to your routine (Kat's Fave Upper Body Gym workout, anyone!?), then we've got you, girl! Get the most out of your gym sesh with our 5 tips!
Familiarize yourself with the set-up
The first step to mastering the gym: Knowing where all of the equipment is and how it works. Most gyms will give you a tour when you sign up. If you've been a member for awhile but still feel a little lost or have no idea how to use that one pesky leg machine, don't be shy! Just ask the front desk employees to show you around. They want you to be able to utilize the equipment and enjoy your sesh, so they'll be more than happy to assist you!
Don't be scared of the weight room
Weights are for everyone - not just the dudes who hang out by the bench press! Strength training and toning, whether it be with 5 pounds or 50 pounds, can benefit all. We love adding weight to our leg and upper body routines to build lean muscle and burn extra calories. If you're uncomfortable hitting up the weight room, bring a pal with you to start. The buddy system can reduce tension and make the workout fun!
Have a plan, but be flexible
Gyms are typically packed this time of year. But this doesn't mean you have to throw in the towel for your Booty Call! Plan your workout the night before (hellooo... Weekly Schedule and Daily Workout!!). If a machine or weight that you need is taken, continue on to the next workout that doesn't use it. You can always circle back to that move or swap in another piece of equipment. For example, if you plan on using dumbbells, sub in kettlebells or bring your booty bands for resistance. Or if all the treadmills or taken, opt for a bike or the stair master for your cardio.
Get class-y
Lots of gyms have really great classes you can add to your routine. Most offer yoga and spin classes that are perfect to hit up with a gal pal... and then of course coffee after ;) Check your gym's schedule in advance. You may need to sign up early if spots fill up quickly.
BYO Breakfast
If you run straight from the gym to work or school, make sure to bring your breakfast with you! Remember, your bod needs protein 30 minutes after a workout in order to build beautiful lean muscle. Pack a piece of fruit and scoop Tone It Up Protein into your water bottle. Add water or nut milk to the protein once your workout is done and shake it up, girl! These eats can easily be stored in your gym bag. If you have a little extra time to head home first, try any Tone It Up Smoothie that suits your tastebuds ;)
