4 Science-Backed Benefits Of Getting Out In Nature
By Katrina Scott onHey babe, Karena here checking in from the road! I’m writing this from Badlands National Park, and it’s so beautiful here! Bobby says hi too 🤗
Throughout this trip, we’ve been constantly reminded of the healing, restorative, & transformative energy of nature 🍃🌲☀️ Nature has always nourished and inspired me ~ it brings me joy and helps me live in the present with gratitude.
Plus, research shows that being in nature has so many incredible benefits for our physical and mental health. Here are just a few of the amazing perks.
Busts Stress
Taking just 20 minutes a day to stroll or sit in a place that makes you feel connected to nature can significantly lower your levels of the stress hormone cortisol, according to a study in Frontiers in Psychology. High levels of cortisol are associated with belly fat too, so you’re also getting a slimming benefit!
Increases Energy
Research shows that time in nature helps ward off feelings of exhaustion ~ 90 percent of participants reported increased energy levels when outdoors.
Strengthens Immunity
Being in nature switches our nervous systems from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest” mode. When we are relaxed, our bodies know it’s safe to invest resources toward our immune system. Research also shows that walks in nature reduce inflammatory cytokines in our immune system, which have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and depression.
Boosts Brain Power
Research shows that participants exhibited a 16% increase in attention and memory after taking a walk in nature ~ the perfect reason to take a walk during breaks from work!
Easy Ways To Soak In Nature
You don’t have to take a long road trip or live out of an RV to get out in nature (although I definitely recommend it if you can try it sometime!). There are simple ways you can soak in nature’s beauty every single day:
-Take a few minutes to watch the sunrise or sunset-Whether you live in a rural area or a city, take a walk around your neighborhood without your phone and truly be present with your surroundings...the sights, smells, noises, feelings ~ all the sensations around you
-Sit outside for a few minutes on your lunch break (I love taking my lunch outside)
- Go for a long bike ride or a hike on the weekends
-Have a socially distanced date with girlfriends at a local park
If you do 1 thing for YOU today, step outside and soak in the beauty around you ✨
